Le Nôtre: Thoughts
As my artistic vision became more clear to me throughout school, working as a photographer, and time, learning more about myself, I was able to really hone in on what exactly I wanted to create. Obviously, I will always be taking photos, photography is a passion of mine and always will be. My photographs are a direct link to who I am, and the way that I see the world around me, but always in a more obscure and abstract way. Fashion, specifically men’s wear, although still just a piece of my creative vision, is the more direct link who I am, visually representing me as a person. As I was making the steps to transition into fashion photography, I was having a hard time seeking out people to work for and with because it seemed as though no one, except a few people, shared my vision or aesthetic. As I was graduating from my photography program this past June, all I heard from people was: “What you’re doing isn’t really fashion.” “Fashion isn’t dark, it’s pretty.” “I’m not really sure what you’re trying to do with your black and white photos, but it’s certainly not going to get you anywhere.” “Isn’t there some way you can change your style so that people can appreciate it more?” Right around this time, Reina, a designer and a friend of mine approached me about shooting a line she was working on. She said that she appreciated my work and that I was the only one she knew who wouldn’t have to change their own aesthetic to work with her. Looking at her patterns and what she had designed already, I knew that this was for me, and as we began talking, it became very clear to me that I wasn’t just going to be taking photos. But because I was so willing to support her and her own vision, she reached out to me asking if I would become a part of her brand, now called “Le Nôtre”, or ours. Working on Le Nôtre has been a dream come true. I feel so lucky to have found a group of like-minded people to share my vision with, and despite all that people were telling me just a few months ago, I can say that my vision is truly coming to life, and I have never been happier.
